How We Express Ourselves

Beginning in November Grade 1 began their unit: 'How We Express Ourselves'. As we move through our lines of inquiry, Grade 1 students were very fortunate to have Ms. Chisato Tomihara come and teach them the Flamenco dance and it's history. Ms. Chisato Tomihara is famous for her Flamenco lessons and dancing style here in Okinawa. We were so happy she could make the time to help us with this unit and with our school play.

もうすぐ今年度最後にして最大のイベントスクールプレイが、てぃるるホールで開かれます。子ども達は２月５日の本番に向けて、毎日がんばっています。今年のGrade1クラスのステージは、ジプシーの歴史とフラメンコについてです。ステージでは、スペイン兵と２つのジプシーの家族のお話になっており、子ども達はかわいらしいフラメンコダンスと、荒々しいソルジャーダンスも見せてくれることと思います。

ジプシーやフラメンコの歴史やその踊りを探究するために、沖縄フラメンコ界の第一人者である富原千智先生にゲストスピーカー・ダンサーとして協力を依頼すると、先生は快く引き受けてくださいました。子ども達のために、スクールまでいらっしゃった先生は、華麗なダンスを披露してくださいました。またフラメンコとジプシーの歴史について情熱いっぱいにお話してくださいました。

先生に教えていただいたことを、ステージで表現できるように、残り２週間頑張ります！！

Where we are in Place and Time

Grade 1 had a lot of fun with the unit 'Where we are in Place and Time'. They were very excited to learn so much about themselves and their classmates. We went on several EOTs this unit. We visited the Okinawan Perfectual Museum, Shuri Castle and Tsushima Maru. This was to show the children the history of their community. For their summative assessment the children made a connection to their communities' history and themselves. They presented this in the form of a mini-exhibition. The children enjoyed this unit and had a great job doing it!

'Where we are in Place and Time'私たちの場所と時代’のユニットでは自分の歴史と社会の歴史の繋がりについて探究しました。自分史をまとめた自分の年表をクラスの友達と見せ合い、興奮していました。このユニットで自分たちの周りの社会の歴史を知るために、沖縄博物館と首里城と対馬丸記念館に見学へ行きました。対馬丸記念館では、実際に戦時中に対馬丸に乗っていらっしゃた方に、その時の様子などをお伺いすることができました。子ども達はとても貴重な体験をすることができました。

　最後にこのユニットのまとめとして、体育館で全校児童の前で発表会を行いました。子ども達は、たくさんの質問に答えながら、自分の探究したことを堂々と発表していました。

How We Organize Ourselves

Our unit: “How We Organize Ourselves” was a great success thanks to parent, student, teacher and community involvement! This is the very essence of the IB curriculum and grade 1 parents you are doing an excellent job in playing an important role in your child’s education. We can now reveal the winner of the class election. Our class leader is…Hinata Haneji! Congratulations to Hinata and many thanks to the other candidates and their teams for their hard work! Led by Hinata, the class decided to have a beach cleaning day and family BBQ. The children and their parents picked up trash along the beach and then prepared a very healthy and delicious meal. A special thanks to Ryoshun’s daddy for his help in organizing and executing the BBQ. The children had so much fun playing games and seeing the fireworks! Teacher Jun and teacher Tiffany also had a great time visiting with the children and their families! The next unit will also require parent involvement but we know grade1 parents that you are ready for the challenge! The unit: “Where we are in Place and Time” will allow the students to learn about their personal, family and community histories. We will have several assessments, assignments and EOPs in this unit. We are very excited to learn more about the children and their families!

“How We Organize Ourselves”のユニットでは子どもたち、保護者のみなさん、教員、地域の人たちが、１つになって協力しあい、リーダーについて深い探求をすることができました。これには国際バカロレアプログラムの本質を感じることができました。子どもたちの学びのために協力して下さったお父さん、お母さん、ありがとうございました。

　さてこのユニットでは、２０１１年度Grade1初代クラスリーダーを決める選挙を行いました。選挙に向けてそれぞれの立候補者やサポーターが選挙ポスター作りや、公約作り、選挙演説など一生懸命にがんばりました。大変りっぱでした。

　それでは２０１１年度Grade1初代クラスリーダーを発表します。

おめでとう！！

ひなた君の目標はこのクラスをみんな笑顔にするでした。

　新しいクラスリーダーのもと、Grade1クラスはリーダーとしての社会貢献のためのプロジェクトとして、家族と一緒に行う瀬長島でのビーチクリーンと、その後のBBQ親睦会を企画・実行しました。子どもたちは、お父さんお母さんと一緒にビニール袋を持ってたくさんのゴミを拾いました。またその後のBBQパーティではゲームや花火をして子どもたちは大満足でした。あまりの楽しさに子どもたちは数名、そのままそこで泊まりキャンプを楽しみました。りょうしゅん君のお父さんを始め、保護者の皆さんが参加し協力してくれたことにとても感謝しております。

　教育は先生主導ではなく、子ども、スクール、保護者、地域が連携することによってすばらしいものが出来上がると実感しました。ありがとうございました。

　さて９月から新しいユニット“Where We Are In Place And Time私たちの場所と時代”が始まります。このユニットでも、もちろんお父さんお母さんに探究の輪の中に参加してもらいたいと考えています。お子様と一緒に探求を楽しんでくださいね。

探求内容は子ども自身の、家族の、沖縄の「歴史」とそのつながりについてです。歴史を探求するために校外学習や沢山のアクティビティを用意しています。

How we organize ourselves

Grade 1 had many adventures as we moved into ‘How We Organize Ourselves’. We want to give a special thanks to Mitzuki’s daddy for coming and presenting to our class the responsibilities of being a leader in a company. Mitsuki’s daddy also talked to grade 1 about ways to improve the classroom and their roles as leaders in the classroom. After coming and presenting, Mitsuki’s daddy met us at Yogurt land and facilitated the touring of the building and explanation of the job responsibilities from the Yogurt land staff. The students learned so much and had fun while doing it! A special thanks to the Yogurt land staff as well!
We were also able to see a presentation from Mr. Nakamura about the Battle of Okinawa and the importance of having a good leader and being a good leader. Also, he spoke of the importance of being a good follower as well. Grade 1 was also able to go to Naha City Office to learn how leaders are chosen and how they organize themselves. Using all their knowledge and experience from this unit the children decided to do a beach cleaning project to help the community. They also decided to have a class election and chose a class leader for this project. The students also voted and agreed to invite grade 1 families to the beach cleaning and a party afterwards to promote participation and unity amongst the grade 1 community. Our election is next week, along with our community project to clean the beach. We know you will all be on pins and needles waiting for our voting results we will let you know next time how it all went and who our new leader is! We will also post pictures of our community beach cleaning and community party!

Grade 1クラスでは、‘How We Organize Ourselves’のユニットで“リーダー”について探求しています。このユニットでは株式会社gen(http://okigen.com/)の代表取締役でいらっしゃいます、みつき君のお父さんがゲストスピーカーとしてクラスにいらっしゃり、リーダーについてお話をしてくださり、またリーダーとしてクラスをよくするためには、どうしたらよいのかを話し合うアクティビティを用意してくれました。また、みつき君のお父さんのご紹介で国際通りにあるヨーグルトランドにて1日店長体験をやらせてもらうことができました。子どもたちは、お店の掃除をしたり、お店の外で通行人に「ご試食どうぞー。」と声をかけたりしていました。子どもたちは店長として、どうやったらお客さんがお店に入ってくれるのか考えることができました。

また慰霊の日の平和学習として仲村先生にクラスに来ていただき、先生が体験した戦争について、またリーダーやフォロワーの責任と行動についてもお話していただきました。

このユニットでの2つ目の校外学習として、市役所へ見学に行き市長や議会や選挙の仕組みについて学びました。
クラスでは現在クラスリーダーを決める選挙をしています。グループに分かれそれぞれ候補者を1名選出し、選挙ポスターや公約、選挙演説を考えています。さあ誰がGrade 1の最初のクラスリーダーになるでしょうか。次のブログでお知らせしますね。
最後にこのユニットで学習したことのアクション（行動）として、将来世界のリーダーになるであろうGrade 1クラスの子どもたちは、リーダーとしての社会貢献のために、瀬長島のビーチをそうじすることを決めました。また子どもたちは、お父さんやお母さんにも来てもらって一緒に活動することを希望していたので、7月16日（土）に瀬長島のビーチクリーンの後にそのまま親睦を深めるビーチパーティも開くことになりました。
子どもは前日に買い物に行って、食材を用意し、当日は野外クッキングもします。

Grade 1 May Adventures!

Grade 1 had a successful trip to the supermarket! The children were very careful with their choices. Upon arriving at the supermarket one group realized the fruit they had chosen was very expensive. They chose another fruit that was less expensive and was a larger amount. We were very proud of them! Cooking the meal with the students was just as fun as shopping with them. They were very curious and eager to learn their way around the kitchen. A special thanks to Michael’s mommy for sharing her vegetable omelet recipe with grade 1. The omelets were healthy and delicious!

As we ended our unit, “Who We Are”, we also had a very successful parent meeting. We appreciate the parents who came to the meeting, as we know everyone has very busy schedules. In the meeting the parents brainstormed some great ideas for our next unit’s EOPs. We will be moving into, “How We Organize Ourselves” with a focus on leaders. The parents and teachers agreed that an EOP to the city counsel would be appropriate. We are having Mitsuki’s daddy come speak to grade 1 and we are taking a trip to Yogurt Land here in Okinawa. (http://www.yogurt-land.jp/) He will be able to share with the students the responsibilities of being a leader of a company.

Again, we can not stress enough the gratitude we feel when we have parent involvement in the classroom. The students love having their parents come and share their experiences. It makes them feel proud and special. We sincerely hope that all of you have the opportunity to visit the classroom or get involved with the curriculum throughout this school year. We will let you know the results of our new unit as we move through it and explore “How We Organize Ourselves”!

Grade1 クラスは現在探求している“CHOICE”のユニットでクッキングをしました。このユニットでは”CHOICE”がねらいなので、自分たちで何を作るか話し合って決め、作り方をリサーチし、１人３００円という予算の中でどんな食材を買ったらよいのかを決めました。スーパーマーケットでは、フルーツ担当のグループが、最初に買おうと思ったフルーツがとても値段が高いことに気づき、安くて量も多いものをchoiceしていました。決められた予算の中でGood choiceをしたと思います。クッキングでは自分達が買ってきた食材を使っておいしい料理を作りました。特にマイケル君がおうちでリサーチしてきて、みんなで作ったベジタブルオムレツはヘルシーでとてもおいしかったです。

さて先日、IB保護者ワークショップを行いました。Grade1からは、８名の保護者のみなさんが来てくださいました。今回は、子どもたちが１年を通じて探求する年間探求プログラム（POI）の中で、実際に身近で起きていることを肌で感じ、本物を体験する校外学習（EOP）について、保護者の皆様と教員がアイデアを持ち寄り、どこでどんな体験学習ができるのかなど、みなさんの情報や得意分野などを共有して、よりよい教育環境を作る話し合いをすることができました。ワークショップに参加してくださった保護者の皆様ありがとうございました。

もうすぐ今年最初のユニット“WHO WE ARE”が終わり、次のユニット”HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES”が始まります。　このユニットではリーダーについて探求します。　リーダーとは何か、リーダーやフォロワーの行動や責任とは、リーダーはどうやって選ばれるのかなどの内容を探求します。このユニットを探求するにあたり、株式会社GENの代表取締役でいらっしゃる、G１のみつき君のお父さんにゲストスピーカーとしてクラスにお呼びしてリーダーについてのお話を伺います。またみつき君のお父さんのご紹介で、ヨーグルトランドにて店長や従業員として仕事の体験をさせてもらいます。他には市役所へも見学に行きます。

　将来のリーダーになるであろう子どもたち。この探求を通して立派なリーダーになるという”志”を胸に抱いて欲しいと願っています。

Who I Am

As the new school year began, grade 1 looked so fresh and eager. The students also looked a bit nervous! They were unsure of the expectations of their new classroom and teachers. The students are now settling comfortably into their expected roles. They are beginning to be a cohesive and harmonious team. They care for one another’s educational needs and enjoy growing and learning together. I know this is going to be a great class and an exciting school year full of learning, exploring and growing!

We had “Show and Tell” presentations to begin our first line of inquiry: “things I like”. Students made their presentations fun and unique by singing and dancing to music of their choosing. It was so much fun for them and very entertaining to watch! Our next line of inquiry: “effects of my choices” led us on a journey to the 100 yen shop. All the students had an opportunity to buy one thing. This allowed them to see not only what they liked but budgeting and discussing why and how they made their choice and the effect of this choice. The students were very careful in their decisions! In this line of inquiry we also had a guest speaker. A VERY special thanks to Ukyo’s father for donating his time and experience to the class. As teachers it fills our hearts to see parent involvement in the classroom! We hope to have many more parent volunteers throughout this school year. This week we are headed for the supermarket to buy and prepare our own lunch. We will let you know how it goes!

期待と緊張で、どきどきわくわくの表情を見せていたピカピカの一年生、一ヶ月が経ち少しずつスクールの雰囲気にも慣れ始めてきています。チームワークを大切に最高の学びの場を、子ども達とともに築いていきたいと思っています。

　
　　現在G1クラスでは、”WHO WE　ARE”のユニットで　”Choice/自分が決めること”について、学習しています。

　そこで先日、まず”Choice”の始めの探求として、自分の好きな物の発表会をしました。一年生の子ども達は、自分の好きな物やCDを自分でChoiceし持ち寄り、歌ったり踊ったりしながら、発表会を盛り上げました。グループで話し合って作った発表会、今年度始めのグループでの発表会は幸先のよいものとなりました。
　
　　つぎに100円ショップに行って、100円という限れた予算の中で、自分で好きな物を選んで買い物をしました。お店に行って買い物をする中で、どんな行動を選ぶのか、また自分の選んだ行動はどんな影響を及ぼすのかを学習しました。責任感についても考えることができました。

　Choiceについて、G１クラスに歯科医でいらっしゃいます、右京君のお父さんがゲストスピーカーとしていらして下さいました。お父さんはChoiceの影響や責任などについてや、健康な歯を管理するためにどんなChoiceをしたらよいのかなどを話してくださいました。自分達の保護者がゲストとしていらしてくださったことに子ども達は、大喜びでした。保護者の皆さんがよりよい学びの場を共に作ってくだっさっていることは本当に幸せなことだと思います。
　ご家庭とスクールが手を取り合って、本物を体験する事ができる教育の場を作り、学びの環境を盛り上げていくのは大変素晴らしいことです。また保護者の方に、みなさんの得意分野で協力をお願いすることがあると思いますのでよろしくお願いします。

　　今週は自分達でランチを作って食べます。子ども達は、自分達で何をどうやって作るのかを話し合って決めて作ります。子ども達はそれぞれ、おうちで家族の方が料理を作っているところを観察したり、手伝ったりして健康な料理や、その作り方をリサーチしました。１人３００円の予算で子ども達はグループで決めたものを作るために、スーパーマーケットへ買い物に行きます。１００円ショップで学習した行動と責任について成長が見られたらと願っております。

　このクッキングの様子はまた次回、報告しますね。
